Coaching, What to Expect

What Actually Happens in a Strengths Coaching Session? Here’s What to Expect

Coaching, What to Expect

If you’re curious about strengths coaching, but not quite sure what to expect, you’re not alone.

A lot of people think it’s going to be like therapy…or a performance review… or even a motivational pep talk. In reality, a strengths coaching session is something quite different. It’s powerful, practical and deeply personal –  and if done well, it feels more like a conversation that unlocks lightbulb moments than anything else.

As a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, I often meet people at a crossroads:
➤ Feeling stuck in their careers
➤ Struggling to communicate what they bring to the table
➤ Wondering why they’re good at something… but still feel unfulfilled

Sound familiar? Let me walk you through what actually happens when you say yes to a session.

  1. We Start With You, Not Your Job Title

Before we get into the mechanics of work, teams or leadership, I want to understand who you are. Not just what you do.

You’ll likely have taken the CliftonStrengths assessment before our first session, a 30-minute tool that reveals your top talents. But that’s just the starting point. I’ll ask questions like:

  • “What parts of your day give you energy?”
  • “Where do you find yourself naturally leading or solving problems?”
  • “Have you ever felt misunderstood at work or like people don’t ‘get’ how you think?”

The goal? To help you see what’s already within you – often things you’ve brushed off as “just how I am” are actually your superpowers.

  1. We Decode Your Strengths and What They Really Mean

CliftonStrengths isn’t just a list of buzzwords. It’s a language of how you naturally think, feel and behave when you’re at your best.

During the session, we’ll unpack your Top 5 strengths in a way that’s practical and personal.

Take Empathy, for example –  it’s more than being “nice.” It might mean you sense emotional shifts in the room before anyone else. Or Responsibility might show up as your relentless follow-through, even when no one’s watching.

Together, we look at:

  • How your strengths work together
  • What you might need from others
  • Why certain work environments feel energizing… or draining
  1. We Connect Your Strengths to Your Real Life

This is where the magic happens. We move from insight to action.

➡️ If you’re in HR, how do you use your Connectedness to build culture – and your Relator to foster deep trust in one-on-ones?
➡️ If you’re job hunting, how do you speak confidently about your strengths in interviews or your CV?
➡️ If you’re a manager, how do you lead in a way that feels authentic instead of forced?

This part is not one-size-fits-all. It’s about helping you make intentional choices in how you lead, work, and grow.

  1. You Leave With Clarity and Language

Many clients say the biggest takeaway is language.

They now know how to articulate their value without feeling like they’re bragging. They understand why some tasks energize them, while others leave them flat. And they can start making better decisions aligned with who they truly are and not who they think they “should” be.

So… Is Strengths Coaching Worth It?

If you’ve ever:

  • Felt like you’re made for more
  • Wondered why some work lights you up while other work burns you out
  • Struggled to explain your unique value

Then yes, it’s not only worth it… it’s transformative.
Because when you truly understand and own your strengths, you stop second-guessing yourself and start showing up with confidence.
